Autism Resources

I'm Shannon Anderson, and I have a daughter who has been fighting this.   I live up where the pine trees sing, so there hasn't exactly been good medical support for us.  Our struggle finally saw progress when I found Tammy Glaser and the ladies of the Aut-2b-Home email list.  I've put this page together to thank those people who share their knowledge and experience so freely, and to allow other parents a simple place to find what has worked for the different types of this disorder.  This page was just entirely too large, so it's now broken up into different ranges of information.  Places with information in several catagories are on each page to make it easier to find the exact information that you're looking for.  The first, "Learning About Autism" is the place to go to make sure you have all of the basic information, and for websites to educate family, friends, doctors and teachers in the tried and true ways that have helped our children.  Next, "Curricula" to have concrete steps and methodology to help the kids find their full potential.  Not every parent can homeschool, but everyone is a teacher - after all, you teach behavior daily.  Then, "Where to get Help" to help you find resources and people.  "Medical, Diet, and Evaluation" so you can do your own research to find what exactly can flow together for the best results.  Finally, "Legal and IEP information"   It's sad that this is even necessary, but even when we can get our ducks in a row and get our homes and bodies functioning, there will still be bumps on the way dealing with schools, SSI, and others.  Our happy postscript is about Adult Information.   Where will our children be in 10 years?  It's a new section, but Mr Olson has a site that will give parents hope for what can come.

AUT-2B-HOME - This email list is a collection of families who are homeschooling their autistic spectrum children full-time or part-time.  Our conversations encompass both education and autism:  developing programs that meet individual needs and learning styles, teaching methods, curriculums, resources (books, websites, organizations, etc), autism therapies, homeschool laws, IDEA laws as applied to homeschoolers, homeschool support groups, addressing lack of support from family and professionals, environmental issues, diet, nutrition, etc.  The atmosphere of the list is intended to be positive and supportive with exchange of information, brainstorming and sharing of triumphs and tragedies highly encouraged.  Information on joining the list is under email lists.

Kelly Dorfman is a nutritionist in North Potomac, Maryland. She's done lots of work with children with autism and related disorders (Autism Spectrum) and founded a newsletter called the Developmental Delay Registry.  We've taken our sons to see her and have had several telephone consultations with her. Parents Guide to Seizures and Epilepsy from Johns Hopkins (from our public library), and I do think these folks have some very knowledgable people who are really dedicated to assisting their patients, particularly children. Their book was open minded about using or avoiding various medications, as well as diet and particularly identifying stress factors that play an important role in triggering seizures. Johns Hopkins Medical Centre has a book "Seizures and Epilepsy in childhood: A Guide for Parents" by Drs. Freeman, Vining & D. Pillas. Here is a summary of information from that book. (The book is often available through public libraries)

  Homeopathy

_The Complete Homeopathy Handbook_ by Miranda Castro. A good introductory book.  It covers a great deal of daily life and includes methodology, an abbreviated materia medica and repertory. It's a good starting point for an introduction.
(review by Anat S)
Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines by Stephen Cummings, M.D.and Dana Ullman, M.P.H.  For a general understanding and day-to-day care  (review by Melissa W)
Homeopathic Medicine at Home by Maesimund B. Panos, M.D. and Jane Heimlich  For a general understanding and day-to-day care  (review by Melissa W)
"The Homeopathic Treatment of Children," by Paul Herscu, N.D.  For a deeper picture, this is excellent.  This books gives detailed descriptions of eight different constitutional types of children.  Constitutional treatment is deeper acting than just treating colds, aches and pains, etc.   (review by Melissa W)
